The Naugatuck Basketball Association is one of the few leagues in the State of Connecticut that provides an opportunity for high school age players to continue participating in the sport of basketball through their secondary education years.
In its 35 years, the League has expanded to 15 teams and over 200 players on an annual basis. The local business community has proudly and readily provided sponsorship for the NBA which provides not only an opportunity for basketball, but mentoring by coaches coupled with the League's Say No To Drugs message.
Almost all the coaches and referees are former players who give back to the League in order to maintain the experience they had for younger players.
The Commissioner of the League is Attorney Kevin McSherry, who has coached, served as a director and
commissioner since 1982.
As
commissioner, Kevin McSherry has doubled the size of the league and
increased the number of players by over 100 players per year.
Originally known as the Friday Night League, the league now plays a dozen games a week, 3 games per night, Tuesday through Friday at the City Hill Middle School gymnasium. Practice sites are located in gymnasiums at Maple Hill School, Prospect Street School, Central Avenue School, Andrew Avenue School and Hillside Middle School.
In
the 2008-2009 season, Commissioner McSherry with the help of Naugatuck
Savings Bank Foundation, Senator Joseph Crisco and Carlos DeSousa/Mark
Pereira was able to obtain brand new scoreboards for not only the City
Hill gym but also the gym at Hillside Middle School and the Naugatuck
YMCA. The scoreboards are a part of the league's efforts to make
improvements to the gyms. Past improvements include a scoreboard just
replaced at City Hill and the glass backboards at City Hill.
The NBA is grateful for the cooperation, support and generosity of the Naugatuck Board of Education and the principals who allow us to be guests in their schools. This spirit of cooperation allows the league to exist and provide important opportunity for the teenagers in our community.
